Micro-Gratitudes: The Small Things Worth a Big Thank You

Gratitude gets talked about a lot — journals, quotes, even entire holidays. But when you’re in the middle of something hard, like chemo or recovery or just a rough Tuesday, “gratitude” can feel… heavy, and sometimes impossible.

That’s where micro-gratitudes come in.

Tiny thank-yous. Quiet acknowledgments. The everyday mercies that remind us that even when life’s messy, there’s still something good tucked inside it.

What Micro-Gratitude Really Means

You don’t have to be thankful for everything — that’s unrealistic (and honestly, exhausting).

But there’s power in being thankful in everything — in finding one small moment, one small comfort, that helps you breathe a little easier.

Micro-gratitudes are about shifting focus.

They say: “Okay, maybe today isn’t great, but this one small thing? I’ll take it.”

A Few of My Own Micro-Gratitudes

    • A medical team with a sense of humor that gets my sense of humor.
    • Coffee that actually tastes like coffee – and I drink organic coffee!
    • A text that says, “Thinking of you,” at the exact right moment.
    • Making it through the day without having to nap!
    • Sitting outside for five minutes and realizing the world kept going— and so did I.

They’re not grand or profound, but they make my world feel a little softer.

How to Find Your Own Micro-Gratitudes

Start small.

Notice one thing each day that makes you feel even a little bit lighter — something that might otherwise slip by unnoticed.

It could be:

    • Your dog doing something silly – and yes, the photo with this post is our new puppy, Cooper.
    • A moment when pain eases up – even just for a bit.
    • Laughter that came easier than you expected.
    • Chatting with a friend, sharing a giggle or two.

You don’t need a gratitude journal or a special ritual (though if sticky notes on your fridge make you smile, go for it). All you need is awareness — a quick pause to say, “That’s good. Thank you.”

The Ripple Effect

The more we spot small things to be grateful for, the more they seem to multiply. Gratitude doesn’t erase the hard stuff — but it balances the scales a little.

When I stop and name even one micro-gratitude, the day feels more manageable. It’s a way of saying, “This isn’t perfect… but it’s enough.”

And…be sure to pass gratitude on! Sometimes, a simple “thank you” to someone or even a smile, might make someone’s day.

Your Turn

What are you grateful for today — something small that made you smile, breathe, or laugh?

Drop it in the comments. You never know who might need that reminder of light.

  1. Curve balls…I’ve had so many thrown at me in the past few months I feel like I could play for the Astros!! Ups
and downs with my son’s cancer to finding out our home we bought a year ago was full of mold and the seller knew it and just painted over it. Now after $30,000 in removal charges, lawyers are telling us sure we will represent you just pay us $33,000 Up Front! But if it wasn’t for my little sweet girl’s face wanting me to hug her, I really don’t know if I could get through all this. Nothing cuter than a “beaglie” face
