Laughter and Cancer: The Importance of Humor During a Cancer Journey
Laughter and Cancer: The Importance of Humor During a Cancer Journey A cancer journey is undeniably one of life’s most challenging experiences. The physical, emotional, and psychological toll it takes on cancer Warriors and those who care about them is immense. In the face of such adversity, it might seem counterintuitive to even suggest humor as a coping mechanism. However, the power of laughter should never be underestimated. Humor has a unique ability to shine a light in the darkest of times, offering relief, connection, and strength during this time. The Science of Laughter Laughter is more than just a spontaneous reaction to something funny; it’s a complex physiological response with many positive effects on the body and mind. When we laugh, our brain releases endorphins, commonly known as “feel-good” hormones. These endorphins not only alleviate stress and anxiety but also contribute to an overall sense of well-being. During a cancer journey, when stress and worry can be overwhelming, this

Ain’t Nobody More Badass Than Survivors
Ain’t Nobody More Badass Than Survivors Guest author: Catherine Avery – and yes, that’s a photo of Catherine! Once again, I steeled myself for the conversation that goes nowhere. Maybe just maybe…after four and a half years of begging to stop taking Letrozole and literally take anything else, my oncologist would say the words I longed to hear: “You’re done with it.” Imagine my shock this time when he said simply “You’re done.” Two words and a nearly eight-year cancer journey had come to an end.We did all the things – exam, discussion of my appointment in September, 2024.So I’m done…but not really.I mean I AM a cancer survivor. But still no oncologist for over a year feels magical. I like him. He’s a great doctor.I just want to close that chapter and open the next. As I left the building, I was sobbing and laughing all at the same time.Concerned staff members, likely thinking I had just heard the worst, asked me
The Waiting Game
The Waiting Game A cancer diagnosis is undoubtedly one of the most challenging and life-altering experiences someone can face. From the moment they receive the life-changing news, a rollercoaster of emotions, uncertainties, and fears begins. However, there is another part of the cancer journey that often goes unnoticed but weighs heavily on everyone – the waiting game. And not just the patient is affected. Loved ones, friends, even business associates, also go through this. We spend A LOT of time waiting – often in fear. So, what are the “pieces” of this game? Waiting for test results can be excruciating. The days or weeks spent anticipating a diagnosis can be filled with anxiety and sleepless nights. Each passing moment seems to stretch, amplifying the fear of the
What Do I Do Now? First Steps for Caregivers Under the Family and Medical Leave Act
What Do I Do Now? First Steps for Caregivers Under the Family and Medical Leave Act Guest Author: Mary E. Wright, Esq., Wright & Supple LLP My friend Deb Krier asked me to write about things I wish I’d known before my husband was diagnosed with cancer and I asked for time off from work to care for him. Hands down, my first question was “what do all the freaking numbers really mean?” While I ultimately reached peace with my understanding of the numbers, I’m a lawyer, not a doctor so I won’t be giving out medical advice or strategy. What I think might be of much greater help (and certainly more reliable) is, how can I translate 20+ years’ of employment law experience into practical steps for caregivers and their Warriors when they have to interact with their employer on things like medical leave (including leave for caregivers), wage continuation (like PTO and sick days) or state-run wage replacement
